The number of non-fatal accidents at work in Malta fell in the last quarter of 2014.

The number of accidents at work in Malta has fallen by 3.7% year on year (60.71 KB PDF). According to a news release by the Malta National Office of Statistics (NSO), most of the accidents in the last quarter of 2014 occurred in the manufacturing sector (21.1%). Other sectors where accidents were quite common included construction (15.4%) and transport and storage (13.2%).

The Maltese Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) has been active in the prosecution of employers who were found to be guilty of negligence resulting in accidents at their workplace. Successful prosecutions have included cases where a worker was paralysed after unsecured loads fell from a forklift truck, and where an employee’s hand was badly injured when the safety mechanism on some machinery was bypassed.

On its website, OHSA urges people to pass on any information about unsafe working situations.
