Abstract

The European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions carried out major surveys on working conditions in Europe in 1990, 1995 and 2000. The findings of these surveys reveal a number of alarming trends regarding age and working conditions, in particular: a low level of access to training for older workers, a high degree of physical work among workers in the middle age category, and an overrepresentation of young people in shift and night work. There are also contradictory trends to be observed in policies aimed at older workers.
