Drawing on its latest research findings about care, long-term care and early childhood education and care, and in the context of the European Commission’s new European Care Strategy on quality, affordable and accessible care services across the EU, as well as the European Parliament’s resolution Towards a common European action on care, Eurofound facilitated a one-hour live discussion on this theme. This interactive debate was a timely opportunity to recall the main challenges with practitioners and experts and explore key questions:

We have a new European Care Strategy – Where to go from here?
How to improve access to formal care?
How to attract more people to the care sector and improve retention, especially as many staff shortages in the care sector are driven by staff themselves not being able to access childcare and other care services?
Do we need to change the way care is valued and organised in the EU?

The webinar looked at how the provision of care services is at the core of effective social protection in the EU, quality of life, access to education and employment. As women are often the main providers of both formal and informal childcare and long-term care, there is also a strong gender dimension. In addition, Europe’s ageing population means that care, in line with principle 18 of the European Pillar of Social Rights on the right to long-term care, is more important than ever.

Hans Dubois, senior research manager at Eurofound’s Social Policies unit, together with Stecy Yghemonos, Executive Director, Eurocarers and Philippe Seidel Leroy, Policy Manager on Social Protection and European Parliament, AGE Platform Europe, debated these pressing issues and engaged with viewers via a live online chat. The webinar was moderated by Eurofound's Head of Information and Communication, Mary McCaughey.

Speakers

	Moderator: Mary McCaughey Mary is Head of Information and Communication in Eurofound. A graduate of Trinity College, Dublin and the College of Europe, Bruges, she started work in Brussels with Europolitics and the Wall Street Journal Europe. She worked with the Association of European Parliamentarians with Africa (AWEPA) in South Africa during the country’s transition to democracy, and in 1998 she took up the post of spokesperson with the Delegation of the European Union in Pretoria, heading up its press and information department during the negotiation of the EU–South Africa free trade agreement. Following the end of the Kosovo War, she worked as a communications consultant for the European Agency for Reconstruction in Serbia. She took up the post of Editor-in-Chief in Eurofound in 2003.
	Speaker: Hans Dubois, Eurofound Hans Dubois is a senior research manager in the Social Policies unit at Eurofound. His research areas include household over-indebtedness, healthcare, long-term care, social benefits, retirement and quality of the local area. Before joining Eurofound, he was an assistant professor at Kozminski University in Warsaw. He completed a PhD in Business Administration and Management at Bocconi University in Milan with a research stay at the International Centre for Policy Studies in Kiev. His dissertation was on 'Decentralisation in public administration'. Prior to this, Hans was a research officer at the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies in Madrid. He studied both Economics and Medical Biology at the University of Amsterdam, with semesters at Harvard University and Universidad de Salamanca.
	Speaker: Stecy Yghemonos, Eurocarers Stecy Yghemonos is the Executive Director of Eurocarers, the European network working with and for informal/family/unpaid carers. Eurocarers brings together 75 organisations from 25 countries, whose collective efforts aim to ensure that the growing care needs of the European population are addressed in a universal and equitable way and that the vital contribution of carers is valued, recognised and supported. A trained journalist, Stecy is an EU policy and communication specialist. Over the last 18 years he has been involved in the implementation and reinforcement of EU policies in the areas of human rights, health and social equity and access to good-quality care.
	Speaker: Philippe Seidel Leroy, AGE Platform Europe Philippe Seidel Leroy is Policy Manager on Social Protection and European Parliament at AGE Platform Europe. He is responsible for AGE’s policy work in the area of social protection, including issues related to pensions, old-age income, social inclusion, long-term care and the social protection aspects of health. He also leads AGE's work on gender equality. Philippe coordinates AGE’s relations with the European Parliament (EP) and the EP Interest Group on Intergenerational Solidarity. He studied political science and human rights and has worked in the area of children's rights.
