Living and working in the EU e-survey: 2024

In the latest iteration of the Living and working in the EU e-survey, Eurofound continues to measure how the economic and social impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and increases in the cost of living continue to affect people across the EU and beyond. How has the situation changed? What are the main concerns for people? Where are the opportunities for progress and improvement?

This new e-survey round comes during a year of huge potential political change, as elections take place throughout the democratic world, with 49% of people on the planet set to see a national election in their country. This is in addition to EU and regional elections.

The 2024 e-survey data collection is now closed and results are expected to be published by the end of the year.

E-survey objectives

The Living and working in the EU e-survey ran from 25 March to 24 May 2024, aiming to capture the far-reaching implications of the pandemic and rising living costs for the way people live and work across the EU, with the aim of helping policymakers to respond to the needs of citizens.

Drawing on the unique results of this pan-European survey and building on previous research, Eurofound seeks to provide critical support to policymakers as they face the challenges ahead.

Focus of survey

This round of the e-survey continues on from previous rounds and aims to assess the current situation facing people in the EU. It examines a range of issues around people's quality of life and the quality of society, and has a particular focus on the cost of living, levels of social support, access to public services such as healthcare, and mental health. It asks questions such as:

  • Have you been struggling to make ends meet?
  • Do you feel the cost of living has increased?
  • Do you have difficulties getting quality healthcare?
  • What do you think about healthcare in your country?
  • Do you feel you have no one to support you?
  • How is your social life?
  • Have you been struggling with your mental health?
  • How is your mental well-being?
  • How's your life and work?

Scope of survey

This round of the e-survey focuses primarily on the EU27 Member States.
