Abstract

EIRObserver is the bi-monthly bulletin of the European Industrial Relations Observatory. It contains an edited selection of feature and news items, based on some of the reports supplied for the EIROnline database over each two-month period. On top of this, EIRO also conducts comparative research on specific themes. EIRObserver continues its initial coverage of the candidate countries in this issue, with the first features on Poland and Slovenia. The supplement in this issue examines the extent and development of non-permanent employment (e.g. fixed-term contracts, temporary agency work, casual or seasonal work) and its regulation, focusing on collective bargaining and the implementation of the 1999 EU Directive on fixed-term work. It also looks at the possible effects of non-permanent employment in terms of working conditions and prospects and outlines the views of the social partners.
