Presidency priorities

The Hungarian presidency focuses on seven overall priorities:
  • New European Competitiveness Deal
  • The reinforcement of European defence policy
  • A consistent and merit-based enlargement policy
  • Stemming illegal migration
  • Shaping the future of cohesion policy
  • A farmer-oriented EU agricultural policy
  • Addressing demographic challenges
Priority areas for the Hungarian presidency in employment and social affairs include:
  • Promoting labour market integration of career starters and older workers
  • Addressing labour shortages
  • Work–life balance, achieving equal opportunities and gender equality
  • Mental and physical health of workers and intergenerational solidarity
  • Social and economic integration of persons with disabilities
  • Social inclusion and access to quality services, reducing inequalities
  • Strengthening public employment services
  • Council Conclusions on untapped labour potential in the EU
  • Finalising the amendment of the European Works Councils Directive
  • Progress on the traineeships package published in March 2024
  • Progress on a proposal on the right to disconnect and telework

Eurofound's contributions to presidency activities

Eurofound contributes to a range of different meetings and events, providing expertise in the areas of employment, social and work-related policies and preparing supporting documentation as requested by the presidency. 

Ivailo Kalfin, Eurofound's Executive Director, took part in the informal Ministerial meeting, while Daphne Ahrendt, Senior Research Manager in the Social Policies unit at Eurofound, presented findings on employment of persons with disabilities at the conference You are Valued! disABILITY - Employment for all.

Eurofound presents a keynote speech on the integration of young people in the context of the digital transition and labour shortages.

Background paper: Youth integration in the EU: Navigating digitalisation and labour shortages – Background paper

On request, Eurofound prepared a steering note on labour shortages as background for ministers for this event.
